📱 Battery failure on the move: when the connected city comes to the rescue

Who hasn't felt that little surge of stress when their phone's battery drops to just under 5% on the move? In a society where our smartphone has become a veritable travel companion, this type of anxiety is far from rare. Today, we even talk about nomophobia, the fear of finding oneself without access to one's phone. At BubblesMapper, we're taking a close interest in this issue, because it has a direct impact on the quality of mobile life.

Nomophobia: a new urban disease

The smartphone is everywhere: communication tool, GPS, camera, diary, means of payment... It's hard to do without one. A few years ago, an OpinionWay study revealed that almost 90% of French people fear that their phone will run out of battery. And this phenomenon is only intensifying: according to the State of Mobile 2023 report, we spend an average of 5 hours a day on our mobile screens, twice as much as in 2019.

The result? Even with more powerful batteries, intensive use creates a permanent sense of urgency to stay connected. And this stress increases tenfold when we're on the move, far from any familiar power outlet.

Recharging in town: towards more accessible solutions

Faced with this growing dependency, urban infrastructures are adapting. More and more public and private spaces are being equipped with connected furniture that can be charged wirelessly or by USB port, in addition to traditional mains sockets (read here about the risks to your personal data). Libraries, town halls, associations, cafés, restaurants or sports clubs... they're all taking part in this new form of connected welcome to the city.

Some locations, such as airports, shopping malls, cinemas, sports halls, trade fairs and even amusement parks, go even further, installing secure lockers with integrated recharging or battery distribution terminals. In France, companies such as DirectCharge, Plug'Heur and ChargeBox are innovating and deploying connected “on-the-go” mobile recharging solutions in high-traffic areas.
